Nar-Anon Family Group Meeting

Sharing experience, strength and hope, the Nar-Anon Family Group is primarily for those who know or have known a feeling of desperation concerning the addiction problem of someone very near to them.  Our program has been as helpful to us as the Narcotics Anonymous program is to the addict.  We ask for the wisdom and courage to see ourselves as we really are, to do something about ourselves with the help of a Higher Power as we understand this, and the grace to release our addicts with love and cease trying to change them.

Whittinghill, a former hospice chaplain.

Holidays are among the hardest times for those who have had a loss. They are fraught with family rituals and layered memories. Sometimes trying to be “normal” or “merry” is difficult, if not impossible. In November and December the Learning through Loss group will focus on tools to help us through the holidays, remembering that God will provide what we need each day: strength, help and his comforting, empowering and upholding presence. On December 16 at 1 pm we will have a service of remembrance: a special time to honor the memory of a loved ones through prayer, music and lighting candles. Everyone is invited to this ecumenical service to be held in the chapel. A reception will immediately follow.

Communities of Transformation

The goal of Communities of Transformation is to help individuals and families move away from instability, struggle and isolation and toward stability, wellness, and community… or “from surviving to thriving.” This happens through a weekly meeting that includes dinner, childcare, and programming.  Participants attend a 12-week “Awaken Class” to help them identify their strengths and priorities, learning how to set SMART goals.  Then they are matched in small groups with trained volunteers for ongoing support, learning, and leadership development. Though Communities of Transformation (available in ten cities in Alabama and West Florida) began as an initiative of the United Methodist Church, our sites involve denominations and service agencies throughout the community.  In South Walton, Caring and Sharing of South Walton provides the 501c3 umbrella and financial oversight, and volunteers come from a number of local churches, non-profits, and the community at large. The Awaken curriculum we use is not explicitly “Christian,” but we believe that COT is a faithful expression of the healing ministry Jesus modeled, and all Awaken students and volunteers are invited to examine and set goals in the spiritual dimensions of their lives, alongside the relational, intellectual, physical, and financial.

  • Location: Good News United Methodist Church (4747 US Hwy 393, Santa Rosa Beach)
  • Time/Date: Tuesdays, 5:30-7:30 p.m. (new Awaken and volunteer training classes begin Sept. 10, 2019 and February 2020).
  • Cost: None, though donations (meals, supplies or financial) are always welcome.
